History of the Queens Park Soccer and Social Club

This is a re-typing of an article written about the History of QPSC by the late QPSC President Mr David Woodfin on 15th January 1996.......
...The Queens Park Soccer Club claims to have been formed in 1909, but the first record that can be found is in the book "Along the Canning", where Queens Park is recorded as playing in the Welshpool-Queens Park area in 1913 in the Perth Metropolitan Association.
For a time in the early 1930's the Home Ground was "Hopkins Cow Paddock" which was at the corner of Mills St & Welshpool Rd.  During this time, the club was called Welshpool Soccer Club, but about 1935 the club reverted to it's old name of Queens Park, moving back to the Queens Park district.
The Coronation Ground was used for a time before the move to Coker Park. No change rooms or facilities were available at that time and many a visiting player complained of the chills picked up in the 'air - conditioned' large drain that were used as change rooms.
From the mid 1930's the club made a special effort in encouraging school teams and ex scholar players.  This helped in the 1940's when 3 or 4 extremely strong teams were fielded each week, proving to be very competitive.  Coker Park was owned by a local dairy farmer, Mr Coker, before it became the property of the City of Canning.
In the years prior to 1996 the club had increased its junior numbers playing in the USA, had women's teams, had Soccer Federation teams, played in PASSA, and participated in the PSF on Saturdays and in WAASSA on Sundays with Veterans and Social teams.  Queens Park has been involved for many with Primary School Carnivals, hosting both area competitions and finals.  Over 120 schools participated some years ago, this being the highest number.
Coaching Clinics with up to 100 boys with sponsorship from the Town & Country Building Society and under John Ward were hosted by the club for a number of years.
Woodfin Pavilion was built by the club in 1981 allowing a much greater social life.  On many occasions the club entertained and played against ships of the American Navy.  These include the carrier USS Ranger, the Germantown, the Tripoli, the Leftwich, the Us Marines "The Walking Dead" and the Blue Ridge.  On every occasion Queens Park were the winners, with scores up to 10 - 1.  On one occassion Queens Park had a woman in goal, Penny Tanner!
In 1987 the club hosted the Australian Schools Soccer Federation Finals.
Some of the achievements of the club are listed below:
  • 1977 Women Winners of the Consolation Cup
  • 2nd Division League R/U
  • 2nd Division Top 4 R/U
  • SFWA Metropolitan Cup Winners
  • Pioneer Shield Winners in 1985.  This was played between the 4 oldest clubs; Queens Park, Perth City, Caledonians & Subiaco (now defunct).
  • Numerous Carnival Cups have been won at both Busselton & Geraldton.
  • In 1988 the only Bicentennial Soccer Carnival in WA was organised and run successfully by Queens Park Soccer Club. Regrettably Queens Park only came R/U in the competition.
  • The Burt Social Cup has been won by QP Social One Team in 1992 & 1994. This team also won the league in 1993.
  • 1994 also saw Queens Park Juniors win the inaugural Snickers Fair Play Award. The juniors of the club received no card in that season.
  • As at 1996, the most prestigious trophy won by the Club was the Dorsogna Cup won had been in 1991.
  • One of the achievements off the park was The Australia Day Award from the City of Canning in 1993 for community work in the City.
  • 1993 also saw the Floodlights go on at Coker Park on the Number 1 Pitch, allowing night matches under quality lights.  Queens Park held and enjoyable pre-season Night Series competition for many years since that time.
  • The club had been to Bali four times by the time David Woodfin wrote this article, going after the end of the season and playing at least 2 matches on each occasion. The biggest crown in attendance was about 2500. The gat money was donated to the welfare of children.
The ambitions of the club in 1996 were to improve the playing standards and to build an extension on the clubrooms in 1996.
