ARCHIVED Match Reviews of the Master's 2010 Season at QPSC
The 2010 Season was when Queens Park welcomed the Master's League Team to the club. It was an enjoyable season, with some very entertaining matches and match reviews published online. Thank you to the various Scribes from the Master's who so willingly contributed to the Archived Reviews shown below.
29th August 3:00 PM Queens Park Vs Melville City
Paulo de Cowling took the
reins of a Queens Park team unbeaten in their last
two starts on a warm day in his usual fastidious
way; the players were treated to a freshly ironed
kit hanging in numerical order upon arrival.
Now Paul speaks very little but obviously expects
his teams to follow in his quest for perfection and
the first half was probably our best so far for the
season.
Again Johnny Gooner and Neil Edwards worked very
hard through the midfield, teaming well with Scotty
Akermanis who put Queens Park ahead after 32
minutes, like Paul’s preparation, it was a goal of
beauty.
The Melville side, sporting not one grey hair
amongst them, never really troubled the goal keeper
as the Buffy-Cherry combination dispensed of most
attacks. It may not sound like the most intimidating
pairing in the world but they were doing well.
Come half time with three subs Queens Park looked
comfortable and led 1-0
The second half started well with the Park making a
conscious effort not to give away an early goal but
then injuries started to play their part with first
Tino doing his calf muscle, then John straining his
hamstring, this robbed the team of pace but they
were still holding together.
Then the unthinkable happened when Buffy Bufton
strained his groin, the only part of his body that
hasn’t been replaced or sewn back together in the
last twelve months, and the Buffy/Cherry popped. Now
Melville could smell dare I say it blood in the
water and moved in for the kill. They were then
allowed too much time with the ball in the eighteen
yard box and managed to squeeze a goal past the
despairing keeper, who in no way could be blamed.
Ever!
It got worse as our hero from last week Dom “did you
see my goals Chook” Malatesta broke down with a
recurring thigh injury that will definitely need
post season surgery, but with no subs fit to come on
and in a deep John Wayne-ish voice Dom said “hand me
the gloves” and took over in goals, again he was our
hero!! Alas the ball came into our box and Melville
scored with a header that looped into the net,
injuries had taken their toll on a valiant Queens
Park, but they were in no way disgraced and could
have grabbed a late equaliser as the “Perfect one”
our manager of the day “Paulo” burst into the
Melville box and unleashed a fierce drive towards
goal that was pushed wide of his post by a diving
keeper having a lucky day.
It was clear in the end the fittest team won on the
day so let's get down to training and finish the
year in style.
Congrats must go to Scotty Akermanis who
was voted best on field and scored his maiden Queens
Park goal, closely followed by Cherry/Bufton.
Queens Park 1- Melville 2.
The Wharf Street Warbler.
Many thanks again to The Wharf St Warbler for such an entertaining read.
22nd August 2:00 PM Swinging Pig Vs Queens Park , Paul Garnett Reserve.
Queens Park, sitting bottom of
the table, travelled to Rockingham to play the
Swinging Pig and with the playing strip arriving
late with the coach, lets just say the Swinging Pigs
may have had their first fright for the day as Chezz
and Pete Murray sauntered around the front of the
change rooms in lycra. GGrrowlll.....
......Back ladies, they're
taken.
They were soon feeling uncomfortable again as the
Park’s midfield ran them ragged into a strong wind,
Goona twins Rob and John teamed well with the
Terminator like Neil Edwards and the lightening Tino
down the right.
A good run from John saw him spring the off-side
trap and finish neatly past the on coming
keeper. Chook could have doubled the advantage soon
after with a clever run but squeezed the shot just
past the left upright.
The wind was very strong now and kept Queens Park in
their own half for most of the first half, some
strong defending was required and there was none
stronger than centre-half Chezza, who made most of
their forwards lame.
Endless pressure and tiring legs did result in the
hosts scoring just on half time, with the score 1-1
at the break.
With the aid of the wind and the late arrival Dom,
Queens Park did in fact start to Dominate. Dom
(under an injury cloud, in fact a very long and
drawn out injury cloud) went up front and scored
without doubt the goals of the season thus far.
A sweetly timed volley thundered into the top left
hand corner. This seemed to confuse Swinging Pig
because as everyone has come to realise this season
“We are shit!”
Not today loyal followers, that
wonder goal was followed by shot after shot on the
Pigs goal. Neil “I must break you” Edwards worked
relentlessly from box to box and was rewarded by
getting on the end of a string of passes and getting
himself just desserts, never mind the clown falling
over the ball on the line buddy (O.G).
To the hosts credit they hit back not once but
twice, a goal similar to their first put them back
in the race. Step up Scotty Akermanis, with a number
of linking runs into forward areas it was only a
matter of time before something came of one.
A free kick on the edge of the 18 yard box
dispatched with venom through the wall by our hero
Dom, yes a brace for the Italian one!! Surely at 4-2
your thinking, the boys have their first 3 points in
the can. Let’s not go through the penalty kick that
was saved or the goal the hosts scored with 3
minutes remaining because Ritchie doesn’t need to go
through it again after turning?? this week OLAY!!
Well done to Deano, you made the right decision not
to go and watch the Eagles.
So it’s @ home to Melville this week and with a few
faces back and a bit of luck you never know,
C’mon
you Pioneers!!
Final score 4-3 to Queens park
Wharf street Warbler
Many thanks to the Wharf Street Warbler for his most entertaining report. I think we all look forward to this Sunday's game & Match Report with much anticipation.
15th August 1:00 PM Queens Park Vs Lynwood United
The match ended in a 1-1
score line and in Boxing parlance Queens Park had a
comprehensive points win in the first half and
Lynwood a slight win after half time. Nevertheless
well done Queens Park and a good gutsy draw.
Yes it would have been easy to drop the head having
gone one down but we kept plugging away and big Paul
G won a well deserved penalty expertly converted by
John.
Writing these columns makes me more compelled to
convey our continued thanks to Queens Park admin,
our coach Richard and I believe our team responded
in kind today - great spirit fellas!!
Sadly on a negative note, I pose the question "
where do these phantom teams disappear to after
matches"?. Win, lose or draw Queens Park will always
support(over) the opposition's Bar- Fair play fellas!!
18 July 1:00 PM Queens Park Vs Canning City

After a close encounter
against the same opposition the previous week we
went into this game full of confidence and
determined to reverse the scales. It wasn't to be
and we were comprehensively defeated on the day 4-1
by a very good Canning City team. Nevertheless the
pleasing aspect was that we all battled well and in
our post match reflection we emerged with "vim and
vigour", able and ready for our next encounter.
The management of the club provide us all with the
shining light, the hospitality and top class
facilities are generously commented on by our
visitors and provides a wonderful challenge for us
to equal on playing pitch.
11 July 10 3:00 PM Canning City VS Queens Park
Sport can be cruel and a good character assessor. We came up against the third top team in our division and coped with everything they threw at us, yet the final result read 2-1. Not to worry a big pat on the back to the whole team and particular mention to Jason in goal who was like the Rock of Gibraltar and Chucky who literally just stepped off the plane from Dubai to play - Yes I believe we are also Winners - well done Queens Park!!
The Echo Thanks again to "The Echo" for his Match Report
4 July 10 1:00PM Queens Park Vs Phoenix United
How appropriate rising from
the ashes from so many defeats we achieved a well
deserved draw with you guessed it Phoenix United!!
First and foremost to Jason, our goal was safe in
your hands and it was bit of a pity that we couldn't
deliver a victory to you and your splendid back
four. It certainly wasn't due to effort and all
contributed to a most entertaining game.
Our referee(official) did not not have cause to
issue any yellow card such was the sporting nature
of the game. Paul Cowling did an Adam Gilchrist and
as Phoenix were pressing late in the game Paul
achieved the Fair Play Award when asked by the
referee if in fact a corner had been conceded and
Paul responded in the affirmative.
Before finishing, the Management of Queens Park must
again be thanked when we didn't have a linesperson
the Ladies obliged. Lynda having played in the
previous game, not only organised the line for us
but also did it again for the next match - a great
inspiration for us all.
A wonderful afternoon at the Park was enjoyed by all
- Our Thanks.
The Echo Thank you again to "The Echo" for his Match Report
20 June 10 3:00PM Canning Buffers Vs Queens Park
Queens Park Juniors are
certainly in good hands judging by the contribution
from their respective coaches that include John,
Jamie, Tino and Robbie B. in today's game against a
very under-rated , yet talented Canning Buffers
team. Their, sitting mid table is due more to having
points deducted for some indiscretion rather than
been beaten by any of the higher profile clubs.
Yes, we were soundly beaten but we did have stand
out performers, great credit to Jon-Marc for donning
the gloves and putting in a stirling performance.,
John (coach) scored two superb goals and Jamie with
a wee bit of luck could also have secured a brace.
It wasn't to be but despite the adverse score
line
great credit is due to all the lads for giving the
Canning Boys one heck of a game. Must mention also
the superb hospitality laid on by the Canning
Buffers Committee post match and was a great
reminder why we play this great game. Please note I
don't mention Monday mornings!!
Thank you for your support
The Echo Thank you to "The Echo" for his Match Report (my apologies to all for the delay in it being posted online.)
6 June 10 1:00PM Queens Park Vs Mandurah City
Queens Park v Mandurah
We were elevated to our number 1 pitch and even our
most critical observer would have to admit we did it
proud. For us of the more seasoned brigade we cannot
but thank the admin at Queens Park for giving us
this opportunity as well as providing such wonderful
support.
The bookends of our defence were commendable, all
the more when you think that neither Robbie B or
Richard have played this year outfield. It goes
without saying we went in at halftime comfortably
holding our own. A minor lapse late in the second
half found us a goal in arrears. Nevertheless that
indomitable Queens Park spirit found us on even term
and 5 minutes to go.... Yes you Queens Parkers who
are currently in foreign lands I will keep you
guessing........ alas, it wasn't to be they grabbed
a lucky winner, but the real winner on the day was
football and the man in the middle, Ty, did a
splendid job. Mentions must go to our Eleven, but
fitting acknowledgement to John, the under
15s coach who was the goal scorer and also Leigh who
had previously been rostered to paint his house, but
answering the call he put heart and soul into the
game.
Those of you overseas, we done good but missing you
all-Get back safe and Qui...
The Echo Thanks once more to "The Echo" for writing an entertaining Match Report.
23 May 10 1:00PM Melville City Vs Queens Park
Melville City v Queens Park
The referee said it all- Yes, we did have an official referee and his post match comment was "It was a most enjoyable match". However despite the fact that we dominated for the entire first 45 minutes Melville got a fortuitous equaliser on the stroke of half time. All that I can think of is that I'm waiting for my oranges to ripen to provide that extra boost at half time because we simply ran out of petrol in the second half. A very good Melville team ran over the top of us. Our goalkeeper Robbie Bufton sustained a nasty injury and was replaced by Braveheart Peter Murray whose can-do and will-do spirit is a beacon for us all. Our forwards proved that they will score goals in any company, in the meantime we are trying to secure a few plumbers(perhaps a goalkeeper) to stop those leaks in defence. Busy, interesting yet enjoyable afternoon guaranteed.
The Echo Thanks to "The Echo" for another riveting Match Report.
16 May 10 1:00PM Queens Park Vs Swinging Pig
Queens Park 3 v Swinging Pig 6
Our visitors today from Rockingham brought with them an impressive record but any Queens Park team that take the field can only be underestimated at their opponent's peril. We went into the sheds at half-time at one apiece and the Rocking Pig(their name not mine) realised that they were in for a game. Yes, boys take a bow, you played well, you tried hard and yes we are beginning to play with a bit of spirit. It would be remiss of me, as this report has readers across the seven seas( are you tuned in Steve) to make reference to "Chucki" who all would agree had a fabulous game and all Queens Park supporters get down to Melville next week to see his last week in a while before he heads for distant shores. The final score did result in a 6-3 win for the visitors but we did give the visitors a fright, our own supporters a lift and for that keep up the excellent effort boys.
The Echo Thanks to "The Echo" for again providing us with the Match Report.
9 May 10 2:00PM Lynwood United Vs Queens Park
Lynwood United 6 v Queens Park 4
Alas dear lads - Thank you so much for excusing yourselves from Mothers Days but your valiant efforts did not reap the result we deserved. Nevertheless in typical Queens Park tradition every player gave their all and our brand of attractive football generated four goals and even the most biased observer attending would have to admit with a bit of luck we could have doubled it. Yes the home team, dare I say it manufactured 6 goals, Enough said. May I take the opportunity to Thank all the Mums for being so supportive, giving us the time out and I hope you all had a wonderful day. So boys next week, next challenge, no matter the result we know you will give it your lot.
The Echo Thanks to "The Echo" for writing the Match Report.
25 Apr 10 1:00PM Queens Park Vs Rockingham
Queens Park 0 v Rockingham 7
Well the less said about this game the better. We were comprehensibly beaten by a good, well organised team who put us under continuous pressure and to be honest it could have been a lot more if it hadn't been for Paul Cowling and Colin Blacks efforts in defence. We hardly got the ball in their half with our play constantly breaking down in midfield and the poor defence, having to cope as best we could and it being even harder as we didn't have a proper goalkeeper . Dom did as well as could be expected under the circumstances. Our only excuse was that we had 5 regulars missing which meant we didn't even have a substitute in the first half as I had to be ref and our coach Richie came on in the 2nd and made Pete Lonergan ref and I played at right back .It was my last game as I have to go back to England for a while and I lived up to my Skoda nickname by slightly pulling my hamstring near the end but hardly surprising considering the amount of running our defence had to do. Probably the most disappointing game we have had for a long time and one to forget.

Masters Division 1 South --------- Match Report
18 Apr 10 1:00PM Kwinana Vs Queens Park
Kwinana 3 v Queens Park 3
With the temperature at 29 degrees it was not going
to be easy but we got off to a great start with Neil
Edwards putting us in front after 5 minutes with a
simple tap in after a good move that split the
defence and left Tino to put a low cross into the
area for Neil to score. For the rest of the half it
was end to end stuff with both sides putting some
good moves together and ending up in Kwinana
equalising after a bit of careless defending but
just before half time a great move involving Colin
Black, Neil McGovan and Jaffa ended with Tony Head
getting the ball in the area, beating a defender and
putting the ball in the net to make it 2 1 to Queens
Park.
The second half was one of frustration for us as we
gradually lost our momentum and we seemed to be
constantly on the back foot with only the occasional
attack on our part. We eventually allowed them to
score due to a bit of confusion at the back and the
game started to become more aggressive with a
referee who seemed to turn a blind eye to some of
the Kwinana tactics and allowing our goalkeeper
Robbie Bufton to get hammered by the big centre
forward without penalising him. Robbie had to come
off and was replaced in goal by Jason Kilgour who
did a pretty good job but couldn't do much to stop
Kwinana's 3rd goal. a header by an unmarked player.
With 10 minutes to go we suddenly came back to life
and had a number of good efforts, in particular a
great run by Paul Cowling who took the ball, from
the half way line and beat about 4 of there players
before being pulled down just outside the area and
then a great volley from about 20 yards by Tony Head
which was brilliantly saved by there keeper. Kwinana
started to panic and were deliberately wasting time
but from a corner Mark "chook" Bascombe managed to
control the ball and pass it out to Lee French who
hit a well timed shot through a sea of players that
hit the back of the net , much to our delight and
relief, to make it 3 3, There was at least 5 minutes
of injury time to be played but Kwinana had lost
their bottle and their referee blew time on 90
minutes but at the end of the day the draw was a
fair result and neither side could really complain.
It was a pretty good game , especially as a few of
us struggled in the heat. We voted Tony Head as our
man of the match which was well deserved but there
were some good performances from a number of other
players as well.

11 Apr 10 1:00PM Queens Park Vs Gosnells
Queens Park 1 Gosnells 5
In our first league match of the season against a
team who were vastly different and more talented
from the one we played against last year we were
subjected to constant pressure from the kick off and
found ourselves a goal down within a minute when a
good shot from outside the area hit the post and was
put in the net from the rebound. Ten minutes later
after a free kick just outside the area was passed
to the left , none of our players were able to stop
a well struck shot to make it 2 0 to Gosnells. We
had a couple of attempts ourselves but were finding
it hard to keep possession of the ball and
eventually under more pressure from the Gosnells
strikers one of our defenders, trying to clear a
cross, unluckily diverted it into our net, so by
half time we were 3 0 down.
In the second half we started a bit brighter and had
a couple of good efforts including Jason Kilgour
being put through and putting his shot just over the
bar but not a bad effort for someone who is normally
a defender. Despite this Gosnells were still coming
at us playing a simple but effective passing game
and eventually made it 4 0 after a shot blocked in
our area by Steve Cowan bounced and spun in our 6
yard box like a Shane Warne googly and was only
cleared to one of their players who banged it into
the net from outside the area We were very
disappointed at this bit of misfortune but couldn't
complain about the fifth goal that went in 10
minutes later.

Things could have got worse as Gosnells continued the pressure but then Dom had a great 30 yard shot well saved and then a few minutes later we salvaged a bit of pride with a move started by Dom when he put a good pass to Mark Bascombe who then got through 2 Gosnells players , passed it in to Neil McGovan who pushed it to Neil Edwards outside the area and he put a lovely ball in front of Lee "lethal" French who drilled the ball past their keeper, a very well taken goal by a player who has had a very lean spell in the pre season friendlies and had taken a bit of stick from the rest of us. The game ended shortly after finishing 5 1 to Gosnells and although we have to be honest that we were taught a lesson by a very well organised passing team we can take some comfort from our goal which shows that we can play the same style of football ourselves if we put our minds to it.
Thanks to Mal and Allison and everyone else to do
with Queens Park for providing the food after the
game and making us feel so welcome since we moved to
the club this season.

Masters Cup 2010 Match Report
5 Apr 10 3:00PM Queens Park SDV1 v Morley City NDV2

It was the one
that got away!!
Queens Park Masters continues its good form into
season 2010 but sadly its cup run has come to an end
due to that lottery officially known as a penalty
shoot-out.
The festive spirit was very much in evidence during
the first half and a few well chosen words from our
coach Richard Adolphe at half time ensured that our
approach greatly improved in the second half. Morley
also raised their game and the crowd attending were
treated to much better fare. Both teams created
opportunities and I believe Queens Park shaded it in
the amount of efforts we created, but alas it wasn't
to be!!
The winners on the day were the management committee
of Queens Park who put on a great show. The pitch
was in great condition, the hospitality was first
class and mention must be made of the strip -
definitely a standout (but must remember Low is
Big!!). Hopefully we can show our appreciation by
getting our League Campaign off to a good start. We
meet Gosnells at home this coming Sunday.
